Kitchen Transformation

This kitchen has had a major transformation. There were some damaged areas to the ceiling, so I decided it better to overboard using 12.5mm plasterboards instead of patch repair. When the whole ceiling was boarded it was plastered to a smooth finish. The walls were also repaired and plastered.

Advantages Of Lime Plastering

There are many advantages to using Lime Plaster but the most impressive are its breathability and flexibility making it very useful for conservation and older buildings.

Breathable

Lime plaster will allow moisture to easily pass through whereas cement will trap and prevent moisture from escaping, leading to a greater problem - gradually building and then ultimately forcing the damp to come out elsewhere.

Flexible
Whilst cement based plasters and renders are strong in compressive strength they lack greatly in flexibility. Any movement can easily result in the very strong cement based plaster cracking and if used externally will allow the ingress of water and damp. Then the damp will be trapped behind a non breathable render.
So while lime is not as hard, it's more flexible, so suited for use in an older buildings.

In this room the ceiling was plasterboarded and skimmed using normal plaster. All the walls were plastered using Traditional Lime Render and Lime Finish Plaster.

Making Your Home A Sound Investment

There are several ways to soundproof your walls & floors:
Many partition walls don't contain any insulation, so consider removing the plasterboard on one side and fitting acoustic insulation  wool between the studs before you replace the plasterboard. A slightly cheaper way is fitting a layer of sound-blocking plasterboard to a wall or ceiling, then plastering it. This really works well for brick dividing walls between terraced houses or flats.
To insulate floors, lift the boards and fit  acoustic insulation between the joists before you put the floorboards back down.

External Wall Insulation Systems

Insulation render systems is a material that is growing in popularity in the UK. The product used in this project is ParexDPR super fine, it has great insulation qualities as well as being low maintenance and hard wearing. Before applying the material, the external plasterboard has a fibreglass mesh and plastic angle beads fitted. Then the backing coat is applied. When this coat is dry & hard, the final coat can be laid and "floated up" to give the final finish.
